A KEY factor in the future success of Shannon Airport must be the retention of the transatlantic stopover, the Government was warned yesterday.

While the Government’s plan to break up Aer Rianta into three separate companies to run the airports at Dublin, Cork and Shannon has been generally welcomed in the Mid-West region by the industrial and business sector, there are concerns among hundreds of Aer Rianta workers about the implications of the radical Government proposal.

“It is absolutely crucial more than ever that Shannon’s transatlantic status is retained so that at least we have a fighting chance to survive and grow,” said Pat Fitzgerald, Aer Rianta’s workers’ director at Shannon.
