NUMBERS applying for computer and technology courses might be down, but thousands of young students used the internet to accept college places yesterday.

The Central Applications Office website recorded 2,249 online acceptances for first-round offers in the first five hours after they appeared at 6am.

Last year, only 6,000 made their CAO applications on the internet but more than half those who accepted offers did so online. That level of electronic acceptance could be even greater this year, after 23,000 students made their initial application via the internet.

However, CAO general manager John McAvoy urged applicants doing business with them by e-mail not to send attachments.

“E-mail is now a growing way to do business, but if people do have an attachment, we will not open it. That is how viruses spread and we do not want a virus,” he said.

He also urged students accepting online from overseas to tell their parents, and ensure a written acceptance of the wrong course is not made in cases where more than one college place was offered in the first round.

For students considering asking for a recheck on any of their Leaving Cert papers, today is the last day in which they can apply.

These papers will be available to review in the schools on Friday and Saturday of next week and after that, students have until this day fortnight, September 4, to apply for a re-check.

Second-round offers are expected to be posted to applicants early the week after, probably reaching candidates’ letter boxes or available online on Tuesday, September 3.
