Gardaí widen search for mother of dead baby
They believe the baby may have originated in any one of nine towns and villages around North Cork and West Limerick.
It was originally thought the baby’s body had been placed in a waste disposal skip which had been collected in Rathkeale.
Supt Tom Gavin, Newcastle West, said: “The body was found when skips from nine different locations in North Cork and West Limerick had been unloaded by workers in the Broadford waste plant. When we started our investigation in the plant, the situation changed as to the origins of the waste from the different skips.”
Gardaí have ruled out foul play. The body of the full-term baby boy was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital where the State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy carried out a post mortem.
Gardaí yesterday renewed their appeal for the mother to contact them and said she would be treated with compassion and confidentially.
The body of the infant will remain at the hospital and funeral arrangements are likely to be deferred in the hope the mother will come forward in coming days.
