Former president of the GAA Peter Quinn Sr has claimed his fugitive son Peter Darragh Quinn twice tried to purge his contempt of court but the former Anglo Irish Bank would not accept it.

A man arrested in Britain in connection with the murder of Irish human rights lawyer Rosemary Nelson has been released without charge, British police said today.

The Orange Order in Portadown, Co Armagh, has withdrawn from mediation talks with South African lawyer Brian Currin, blaming the intransigence of the Garvaghy Rd residents for the move.

A 42-year-old man was today charged with murdering a Catholic taxi-driver at the height of the Orange Order stand-off at Drumcree in 1996.

The Garvaghy Rd residents are to meet the Parades Commission today to discuss their concerns about an Orange parade being allowed to hold a rally close to the area on Saturday.
