Man held in Nelson investigation freed

A man arrested in Britain in connection with the murder of Irish human rights lawyer Rosemary Nelson has been released without charge, British police said today.

The 29-year-old man, from Portadown in Co Armagh, was quizzed for two days about the assassination after being arrested in Somerset on Wednesday.

Ms Nelson was killed by a bomb loyalist paramilitaries had planted under her car outside her home in Lurgan in March 1999.

Ms Nelson had represented many local Catholics in actions they took against the RUC and the British government.

Her clients included the Garvaghy Rd residents and the family of Robert Hamill, who was kicked to death by a loyalist mob while the RUC stood by and watched.

British police are currently carrying out an independent inquiry into her murder amid allegations that the RUC may have helped those responsible.
