Joint memorial to British soliders unprecedented

Minister Heather Humphreys’, (Irish Examiner April 9) call for a joint permanent memorial to 1916 British Soldiers is a shared history concept gone too far which denigrates those Irish Volunteers who are to be commemorated.

However there is every reason to erect a commemorative memorial in Grangegorman Cemetery where some of those soldiers are buried.

I visited this cemetery in November 2014 and photographed several headstones for their families in the UK. Interestingly one was also prevented by British connections from having a commemorative plaque erected to the memory of the ‘Irish Shot at Dawn’ in Grangegorman Cemetery.

Joint commemorations would be the norm in most countries, however joint memorials are unprecedented. Perhaps government should engage reverse gear and rethink the issues.
