PERHAPS this is the time to say I am an admirer of Ireland’s fight for independence and the Irish love of freedom and democracy.

IT is hardly possible to exaggerate the importance of the publication of the 1641 Depositions in Trinity College Library, hidden from view (in the best Trinity manner) for well over three centuries.

I AGREE with Gerald Morgan (Letters, October 22) that more foreign students are not the answer to the university fees crisis. It would be wrong to prioritise wealthy foreign students over our own.

AS someone who has been privileged to lecture in Trinity College Dublin for 42 years, I simply fail to recognise Myles Duffy’s description of our system of electing a provost as having “the hallmarks of an elite gentleman’s club” (Letters, October 18).

I NOTE with alarm the suggestion by Seán Kelly MEP (Letters, October 18) that we attempt to solve the problem of university fees by the admission of more foreign students.

I STRONGLY agree with Frank O’Brien (Letters, May 15) that the Lansdowne Road stadium should have retained that name given that Irish taxpayers carried most of the cost.

GERALD Morgan (Letters, May 3) salutes the “heroic Irish dead” of the Great War. Yet losing their lives was scarcely the sole sacrificial service.

I AGREE with the view expressed by Dr Gerald Morgan (‘Why Irish nationalism failed the stress test, Letters, March 1) that we must look further back from 1916 in order to appreciate fully the divisions that existed within Irish nationalism.

IT IS difficult to argue with Gerald Morgan’s conclusion (Letters, March 22) that the Easter Rising was provoked by “the failure of the British to respect the democratic mandate for Irish home rule”.

IF Joe Duffy can solve our health problems, good for him.

A GROUP of academics has called on Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny to publicly state his views on the Hill of Tara/M3 controversy.

Fresh calls were made today for the Hill of Tara to be protected during the building of the controversial M3 motorway.

I WELL understand the pressing need for an improvement in our transport system.

IT’S ridiculous to suggest God Save The Queen should not be sung at Croke Park. If the match was at Twickenham and the English said the Irish shouldn’t sing Amhrán na bFhiann, there would be uproar here.

THE Scottish domination of New Labour in the UK (evident surely to even the most casual observer of the political scene) naturally raises the question as to who and where are the representatives of the English in the House of Commons.

IN 1990, the Public Records Office released the files of the young men (some of them boys of no more than 16 or 17 years of age) executed by the British Army for desertion and allied breaches of military discipline in the First World War.

THE Irish Examiner is to be commended for its sympathetic coverage of the D-Day anniversary and for showing us the faces of Irish heroes of the Normandy landings.

WE live in a world where it seems legitimate to spread democracy and freedom by dropping bombs (as recently on the citizens of Baghdad), or to express grievances by the slaughter of innocent travellers (as recently in Madrid).

I AM delighted to see the recent success of the Wolfe Tones' version of Thomas Davis's 'A Nation Once Again' as a candidate in the BBC's No1 song of all time.
