Stand up and repay old sporting debt to England
In his letter (Irish Examiner, February 6), Dr Gerald Morgan, while opposing the British anthem in Croke Park, was very generous in his attitude especially with regard to the GAA’s sensitivities, which should be greatly assuaged by the millions they will receive for facilitating ‘foreign’ games at their HQ.
I have always been treated with the greatest respect by English fans at Twickenham. We should never forget the display of courage and goodwill by England when they came to play Ireland at Lansdowne Road at the height of the Troubles in February 1973 after the Welsh and Scots had decided to stay away.
