Naomi Osaka has admitted that at times over the last year she felt ungrateful about feeling that playing tennis on the world stage was not enough of an accomplishment in itself.

Osaka pulled out of the French Open on May 31 after being threatened with expulsion over refusing to fulfil media duties.

Osaka said she would be taking some time away from the court and it remains to be seen where she will play next.

Having suffered bouts of depression dating back to her first slam title in 2018, tennis star attempted to take control of her battle with mental health at Roland Garros by boycotting media duties.

“The best thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get back to focusing on the tennis going on in Paris.”
