Twenty years ago, an Ardfinnan farmer, accommodation provider and keen hillwalker visited Northern Spain to walk the then little-known Camino. He travelled with high expectations but found himself somewhat disappointed. While the Camino had an undoubted charm, he concluded that St Declan’s Way — an ancient pilgrim trail passing near his home in County Tipperary, which had fallen into disuse — would, if re-opened, be superior.

Reputed to have been walked by the patron saint of Waterford, as he made his way to meet with Saint Patrick, the trail linked Cashel with Ardmore, County Waterford.
