The Dublin City Marathon got underway today with 19,000 runners taking part.

These are the best signs and costumes from the Dublin City Marathon

As it falls on the day before Halloween, naturally many participants donned their costumes for the race.

Here are some of the best ones that have been shared on social media.

The most talked about costume this year was the legend who ran the whole marathon dressed as the Eiffel Tower.

Even more impressive was the member of the Dublin Fire Brigade who ran the route in full protective gear for Rory's Wish To Walk. Twenty of his colleagues also took part in normal running clothes for the same charity.

This skeleton was spotted amongst the crowd - we wonder how many miles he ran before his face paint disappeared under perspiration?

Ireland is still firmly in the grip of Star Wars fever, as Meredith Baker's selfie shows. We're sure lots of the runners ran a little bit faster knowing they were being chased by a Stormtrooper.

Lots of craic was had on the sidelines too, as many shouted encouragement from the crowd.

A few witty souls designed motivational posters too, and these are some of our favourites.

The marathon took place on a Sunday for the first time this year, and these messers were on hand to encourage runners to finish quickly so they'd still make Mass. Now, do they mean traditional mass, or the mass that all your friends RSVPed to on Facebook?

Lisa Rowntree and her family made this sign for her Dad, Edward, who yesterday completed the Dublin City Marathon for the nineteenth time. They posed with it outside Leinster House.

This guy points out the fact that the mighty Chuck Norris never ran a marathon.

Here's a sign that definitely made a few panicked participants run a lot quicker. No one wants Donald Trump to out-run them.

There was no escaping Trump along the route, however, and this time he was joined by his rival, Hillary Clinton, to alert runners that they had successfully passed the wall.

And finally, sometimes a short message says the most. This one surely resonated with lots of the athletes today.

Congratulations to everyone who took part.
