Marley music set to make West End

The music of reggae legend Bob Marley is to be transformed into a West End stage show.

The big-budget musical will be staged by the team behind London's version of the Broadway smash The Producers.

Producer David Ian said: "Marley is still an icon around the world and I'm a big music fan myself, which is a good reason to do the show. A lot of his lyrics and ideas would really service the idea of a musical."

Marley died 23 years ago from cancer at the age of 36, but producer Ian reveals the show is unlikely to be based on his colourful life.

He said: "We are thinking about storylines and writers."

Marley's widow Rita and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell have also both signed up to the venture.

The iconic singer was honoured last week (ends12NOV04) at the UK Music Hall of Fame Awards.
