Scene & Heard - Entertainment news

MUSIC NEWS: After years of languishing in record company archives, the music of Rory Gallagher’s breakthrough band, Taste, has finally been made available again. A four-CD boxset contains remastered versions of the band’s two studio albums, as well as previously unreleased live sets and demo recordings.

Who were the highest-earning celebrity couple this year? Nope, it wasn’t Beyoncé and Jay Z — it was actually Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift. It’s been quite a year for the Scottish purveyor of EDM, having also just topped the Forbes list of the highest paid DJs. That list puts him ahead of David Guetta’s paltry $37m worth of pay cheques, with an estimated income of $66m over the past 12 months.

You’d imagine Morrissey would have a few things to say about the earning power of EDM at the moment, especially when he’s had plenty of his own troubles with record companies. The former Smiths singer is at least broadening his horizons further with the release of his debut novel, List Of The Lost, in September. We saw from his Autobiography that the Manc marvel can wield a pen with aplomb, and look forward to the grim tale of angst and unrealised love we suspect his first work of fiction will offer.

Arcade Fire are releasing their film, The Reflektor Tapes, on September 24, with the Light House Cinema in Dublin and the Omniplex in Cork among the Irish venues confirmed to show it.

GIG WISE: The hottest ticket in Dublin town this weekend is for Sufjan Stevens who plays the Helix tonight and tomorrow.

One gig that didn’t go ahead this week was Tyler The Creator, whose shows in Belfast and Dublin were cancelled for reasons... you guessed it... beyond his control.

In Cork, Mark Knight does his DJ thing at the Savoy tonight, while Ryan Sheridan is at the Pavilion on September 12.

The Alan Kelly Gang with Eddi Reader and John Douglas are at Live at St Luke’s tonight, while it’s post-rock instrumentalism all the way at the Triskel on September 12 with Wicklow outfit Leo Drezden supported by Cork group Leopard Skin Jasper.

You may have seen Crojayn busking on Cork’s streets – they launch their blues-rock-laden debut EP at Camden Palace Hotel tomorrow at 6.30pm.

Waterford also has an upcoming jazz weekender (Sept 3-6), with highlights including a gig from homegrown hero Louis Stewart, and a percussion workshop from Steve Kelly of the RTE Concert Orchestra.

FILM TIPS: Apparently the Hobbit films are getting a director’s cut release which means that each of the three segments is even longer. Some fans are excited at the news, while others feel Peter Jackson was already stretching his adapatations.

Straight Outta Compton will feature in plenty water cooler conversations after the weekend, while Triskel in Cork has Manglehorn, starring Al Pacino and Holly Hunter; as well as A Doctor’s Sword, the incredible documentary on a West Cork doctor in the Second World War.

VISUAL ART: Dublin Gallery

Weekend has been announced for September 11-13, with 30 premises opening their doors for a variety of free events. West Cork Creates continues until September 12 at the O’Driscoll Building in Skibbereen with its collaborative projects between professional artists and crafts makers, designers and photographers. In Macroom, the Here and Now exhibition has gathered an impressive array of work by locally-based artists at the Town Hall Gallery.

ALL AND SUNDRY: Tommy Tiernan is at City Limits in Cork on Sept 11 and 12, while at the time of writing there are just a few tickets left for Alan Carr at Cork Opera House over the next two nights.

From today, Netflix subscibers can catch the eagerly-awaited drama, Narcos, about Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Cartel.
