Last featured in Irish Examiner Farming on February 12, a 44-acre Wicklow farm was successfully sold at auction on Tuesday, February 24 — online and at the Arklow Bay Hotel.
The farm is at Knockanree, 1.5km from the famous picturesque village of Avoca and the auction was handled by David Quinn of Gorey-based auctioneers Quinn Property.
“The auction drew significant interest,” said David after the dust had settled in the busy auction room.
“This translated into a packed auction room at the Arklow Bay Hotel, with 50 people in attendance.”
The farm had been guided at between €12,000 and €15,000/acre and since it had first been advertised, it had drawn “solid interest from the local farming community,” according to the selling agent.
With good road frontage and free-draining soils of excellent quality, it was a piece of ground suitable to either grassland or tillage use. The majority was laid out in grass, with a smaller portion under tillage and just 1 acre in forestry.

The holding benefitted from a three-span shed with a lean-to structure and adjoining farmyard.
Bidding opened at €500,000 (€11,400/acre) before quickly rising to €710,000 (€16,100/acre) with three bidders active.
That became just two bidders fighting it out until the hammer fell on a figure of €780,000 (€17,700/acre), sold to a local farmer.
