Tight cattle supplies lift beef quotes, but factories remain cautious

Most of the processing plants have increased their quoted prices for both steers and heifers by at least 5c/kg this week, while a small minority are reported to have offered their suppliers less than last week for the opening of procurement on Monday.
The hopeful signs of reprieve for beef producers on the prices at the factories are continuing to gain some ground in this week's trade.
The positive omens are on the back of the lowest weekly intake at the factories year to date - under 27,000 head. But the overall margin of gain is more of a sign of moving in the right direction than adding any noticeable increase to returns for producers so far.
