Suckler calving - early positive and negative signs

As with each calving season, you can often see how it will go based on the first couple of calvings. Issues encountered in the first few births need to be addressed as soon as possible, writes ruminant nutritionist Brian Reidy.
Thankfully, we are seeing top prices for milk and beef, along with super prices being paid in the sales ring for all types of cattle. For those who invested in stock to feed for finishing over the last year, they have been rewarded well and that injects confidence into the market.
As these cattle head for slaughter, those finishers will be back out replacing them either straight away or later on this year, which should keep store and weanling prices strong. Those producing these stores and weanlings need a margin in order to continue.
