Agri-food sector seeks to diversify in new markets
The Agricultural Science Association forum entitled ‘The Impact of Brexit on Irish Agriculture” takes place on March 23, in Lyrath Hotel, Kilkenny.
The event is set to coincide with UK prime minister, Theresa May, invoking Article 50, which she has committed to do by the end of March, triggering the two-year negotiation process to leave the EU.
Mary Delaney, ASA president said: “Brexit is the dominant issue for the Irish agri-food industry at the moment. While many in our industry are already feeling the impact of the sterling currency fluctuations, we are still unclear as to what the broader, longer-term implications will be.
"We need to continue to explore the best ways of safe-guarding our industry while identifying new market opportunities in order to define a clear pathway forward.”
The line-up for the ASA forum includes John Moloney, chair, Food Wise 2025; Lucinda Creighton, senior advisor on Brexit to Foresight International Policy and Regulatory Advisers; Jim Power, economist; and Joe Healy, IFA president. The panel will explore what agri-food needs to do to survive in a post-Brexit world.
