The Castletownbere, Co Cork-based seafood company’s role was unveiled at ceremonies attended by President Michael D Higgins and Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton.

Shellfish Ireland chief executive, Michael Cronin, said: “I am extremely excited about the future of Shellfish Ireland which has established itself as one of the main exporters of Irish Shellfish internationally. The company has always shown itself to be a business which attains the highest standards and is trusted by its customers. The new team, which I am proud to lead, will continue that tradition of excellence and build on the strong foundations laid over the last 27 years.”

Shellfish Ireland, established in 1987, is now one of the largest employers in Castletownbere.

Shellfish Ireland recently announced a restructuring of its operations at management level, with former chairman of the Irish Dairy Board, Michael Cronin, being appointed the new chief executive. Original founders of the business, Richard Murphy and Peter O’Sullivan Greene remain as company directors.

To develop new markets in Northern Ireland, Shellfish Ireland approached InterTradeIreland — and through the Acumen programme received support to take on a sales and marketing graduate.

The company also availed of InterTradeIreland support through its FUSION programme to develop new product development systems and the company’s culinary and nutrition capabilities, in order to bring new shellfish products to the Irish and UK retail and food service markets.
