Reduced demand for milk quota

Milk quota for 2013/2014 sold for up to 25 cent per litre in the national milk quota trading scheme.

Of the 28.7 million litres offered for sale, 23.5m litres were successfully traded, including 15.5m litres on the scheme exchange for 9-25 cent (compared to 8-50 cent in the previous scheme).

The remaining 8m litres was sold through the priority pool at the maximum price of 5 cent.

Demand fell from last year, but still outstripped supply four to one.

Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney attributed reduced demand to this year’s milk production running under quota, and the approach of quota abolition in April 2015.

He confirmed that national redistribution for partially unsold quota did not have to be activated.

Details of the next exchange will be announced in December.

Full results for each co-op are on the www.agriculture.gov.ie website.
