North’s horses dominate Cork Show
Richard Iggulden made the long journey from Comber, Co Down, to the Ballintemple showgrounds worthwhile by taking the ridden hunter championship with What’s What, a seven-year-old bay gelding by Ricardo out of Killnamac Penny.
He also won the heavyweight hunter championship with his 10-year-old chestnut gelding, Freddie Kruger, by Crosstown Dancer out of Tessacorra, as well as the Ladies Hunter Championship.
Ballintemple has become a happy venue for the Comber man, who also won the ridden hunter championship and reserve there last year.
Competition was extremely strong again at Ballintemple this year with local breeders facing formidable opposition from various parts of the country.
Horses that do well in Cork frequently go on to further success at other events, including the Failte Ireland Dublin Horse Show at the RDS in August.
Among the most successful southern exhibitors was Rosemary Connors, Woodfield, Co Waterford, having a particularly fine double with Woodfield Valier winning both the four-year-old and ridden hunter mare championships — particularly pleasing because the brown mare by Lucky Valier out of Woodfield Walk — which also won the young horse championship at the Failte Ireland Dublin Horse Show last year — was bred by her late father, Nicholas Connors.
Seamus Lehane, Ballard House, Ballymacowen, Clonakilty, continued his wonderful season by taking the young horse and the yearling-two-year-old championships, with his impressive gelding by Loughehoe Guy out of Ballycoln.
Gerard Murphy, chairman, and Phyllis Lynch, vice-chairperson, Munster Agricultural Society, and the organising committee were delighted with the entry of about 400 in the horse and pony classes.
In the cattle rings, the Holstein Friesian championship and reserve award were both won by John Barrett and Sons, The Laurels, Lehenaghmore, Togher.
Albert de Cogan, Killmuckey, Castlemartyr, had the Aberdeen Angus champion, and also the reserve to the champion shown by Frank and John Appelbe, Carrigroe, Clonakilty, in the Hereford ring.
