Ahern seeks farmers’ participation

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has told the Dáil his officials are in informal contact with the farming organisations regarding their participation in social partnership.

He said it was the Government's desire that farmers should continue in the process, after last year’s difficulties as production costs increased. It was also a bad year for prices, and there was a prolonged period of bad weather, he said.

However, the overall figure for State assistance to the agricultural sector was €2.8bn, of which €1.7bn constituted direct payments.

“The interests of farmers domestically are very much in social partnership. It does not make sense for farmers to remain outside the process. I would prefer them to come in. I have no argument with farmers in these areas,” he said.

The Taoiseach also said farmers have been discussing costs and tax concessions with Ministers Charlie McCreevy and Joe Walsh.

Some decisions relating to these will not be reversed, but alternative mechanisms were put forward.

However, in some areas a contribution from by farmers will be necessary, as the Department of Agriculture and Food’s budget of €800m would not pay for everything.

ICMSA president Pat O'Rourke said the Taoiseach's recognition of farmers difficult income position was positive. “W e will re-engage constructively and immediately, as there is work to be done to increase farm families’ income,” he said.
