EFFORTS to strengthen control of the Nenagh, Co Tipperary-based Arrabawn Co-op by active members failed, when proposals were narrowly defeated at a recent Special General Meeting.

One extra vote would have secured the two-thirds majority needed at two special general meetings to categorise members into suppliers or trading, non-active, and untraceable or deceased; reduce the Representative Committee from 63 to 52, and reduce the board or directors to 18 from 22 to 18.

The directors of the co-op will consider their next move later this month. But it appears unlikely that the society will revisit the issue of structural changes in the short term.
