Con Lucey, chief economist, said that, in addition, some confusion might have been caused by the results of the 2001 Teagasc National Farm Survey published yesterday.

He said it shows a 17% increase in average family farm income for last year, in contrast to the official Central Statistics Office (CSO) farm income calculation showing an increase of only 4%. "A review of the CSO and Teagasc figures over recent years shows that there is much more year-to-year volatility in the Teagasc figures.
