MEMBERS of Caheragh guild in West Cork are looking forward to their annual outing in September.

This year the plan is to spend three nights in Enniscorthy, with tours to Waterford and Wicklow as well as other places in Co Wexford.

This information was announced at Caheragh guild’s AGM which was held recently, with Judy Murphy, West Cork Vice Pres. and CDA in attendance.

Officers for the coming year are : President : Anne Stout, Vice Pres: Cecilia Wilcox, Secretary: Catherine Mullhall, Assistant Sec: Sheila Hurley, Treasurer: Teresa Harrington, Assist. Treas: Susie O’Donovan, PRO : Nora M. O’Sullivan, Arts Officer : Frances Hurley, Timire : Eileen Mc Carthy, International Officer : Joan Collins, Produce Promoter Margaret Deane, Grianan Teachta : Doris Sweetnam, Contest Sec: Nan Crowley and Craft Promoter : Ann Collins.

Tributes were made to the outgoing President, Cecilia Wilcox, having completed three successful years in office.

The guild was busy during the year organising the annual children’s sports and the Bring and Buy sale. Members also helped with running the parish carnival in July and in September, members and friends spent a very enjoyable three days in County Clare and stayed in at the West County Inn.

Speakers at the monthly meetings spoke covered such diverse subjects as mobile phones, reflexology, the use of magnets to relieve pain and massage. Guild members gave floral demonstrations, with a Christmas flavour and also a cookery demonstration.

Competitions entered included the ICA Quiz and Baking Competitions. Frances Hurley gave painting classes and some members tried their hand at whist.

On January 25 Caheragh guild celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the guild’s founding. This was held in the West Cork Hotel, Skibbereen. Many of the founder members were present and some have remained members for the entire 25 years. The President, Cecilia Wilcox, mentioned the deceased members by name (at least 15) and prayers were recited for them.

The West Cork Regional Dinner was attended in Bantry and local competitions and those in Schull were entered.

Members helped with the collection for the Irish Guide Dogs and helped with the function for the launch of the book History of Caheragh which was penned by Donal O’Sulllivan.

Four ICA members are directors of the Capt. O’Neill Company, who published the book.

New members are always welcome to join this vibrant guild. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month at 8.30 pm in the Community Hall.

So if you live nearby and haven’t yet discovered ICA go along and you will be made most welcome.
