Rocking Irish film Sing Street getting American release in April

John Carney's Sing Street made a big impression at Sundance 2016 and it's set to delight American audiences on release in April

John Carney, the director of Once, is back with his new film Sing Street and it's been on a bit of a roll since a rapturous opening at Sundance in January 2016. The film has played in Toronto and opened the Audi Dublin International Film Festival in February, picking up hugely positive reviews along the way. And now it's going even bigger.

We've just heard that Sing Street is set to open on limited release in the US on the 15th of April 2016. That's a huge leap for this low budget music-rich comedy/drama, and it's expected that the small number of screens will be expanded with positive word of mouth. The film was pre sold to the Weinsteins for an American release before it was even finished, so there's a huge amount of confidence in its ability to sell tickets.

Set in Dublin in the 1980s, it's the story of a kid who wants to impress a girl and starts up his own band, despite not having a clue what he's doing. Carney has admitted he drew from his own life for the story which is chock full of real hits from the era as well as a host of homage songs sung by the characters as they pick up influences from the best of the decade. It's fun and has a huge amount of energy and it could well be a huge hit.
