Irish smartphone folks use the most mobile internet in the western world
Ireland tops the polls from Statcounter which shows how much internet activity is accessed via mobile phones.
And in the case of Ireland, almost a third of all internet access is now coming from mobiles.
That’s more than 30 percent higher than the European average and higher than both the US and the UK.
Only parts of Africa and Asia have a higher instance of mobile phone use to access the internet.
These figures only tracked the use of websites on handsets.
With the addition of mobile apps, it’s likely Irish people would be even more tied to the net, thanks to popular apps like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Irish people have also been shown to be moving away from the desktop PC as a traditional way of accessing the internet.
The bulky boxes are just less convenient than having a mini computer in your pocket, so if someone has a question or query they’re much more likely to reach for their phone.
It’s likely that more people will be browsing on mobiles than on desktops by 2016, according to this research, and that includes all the time we spend looking at sites while at work.
Smartphones are very much on the rise but the figures show that tablets are just about standing still, with around 11 percent of internet access in Ireland coming from a tablet.
The upside for Irish people is that we can expect companies here to take notice and deliver up fully functioning mobile sites.
With the move to mobile, no company is going to want to be stuck in the past with a site that’s poorly optimised for viewing on your smaller screen.
