NUIG tasked with researching ways to improve smartphone cameras

NUI Galway has been awarded a €1.5m grant to develop a research project to improve the image quality of smartphone cameras.

Before you get too excited about replacing your DSLR with a smartphone you should be aware that the research project will run for four years. That seems like a long time to wait for the perfect selfie camera.Principal investigator Dr Peter Corcoran is optimistic about the project. He said that this research will contribute to “the future needs of the global consumer electronics industry.”The research project is being part-funded by computational imaging company FotoNation. The company’s technology is used in more than 2 billion smartphones and digital cameras. FotoNation plans to work with the researchers to apply the findings in its software.Many smartphone manufacturers are turning to their camera to find a way to stand out in an increasingly competitive market. Minister for Skills, Research and Innovation, Damien English TD said at the launch that social media is becoming increasingly visual. There has been a huge growth in the amount of photos and videos now being shared online.This, he said, “is driving strong demand for advancements in smartphone camera technology.”NUIG is being tasked with finding ways to advance this technology in the coming years.
