Carbon claims validator Planet First appoints new advisor

CO2 removals validator Planet First Registry has appointed Dr Rebecca Heaton as special advisor, leading the design and build-out of its new nature-based programme.
Planet First Registry (PFR) is a blockchain-based registry giving scientific validation for measurable, permanent CO2 removals. PFR recently received endorsement from the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Accreditation (ICROA).
Dr Heaton is a non-executive director, senior advisor and forestry commissioner with more than two decades of experience across nature, climate, energy and finance. She will work with the PFR board and executive team to develop the registry's nature-based methodologies, governance and integrity framework, building on the foundations of its ICROA-endorsed carbon programme.
Dr Heaton brings corporate, policy and scientific leadership. She has been group director of environmental sustainability and group ambassador for Wales at Lloyds Banking Group; director of sustainability at OVO; group head of climate change and group head of sustainability and policy at Drax; and senior strategy and scientific roles at Shell and BP.
She was a member of the UK Climate Change Committee (2017–2021), non-executive director of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC, 2020–2024), a commissioner of the Forestry Commission, and a member of the four-person expert group advising the Welsh Government during the Covid-19 response.
She currently serves as senior advisor on nature markets and green finance at Severn & Wye Nature, and as senior advisor at Robertsbridge. She holds a PhD in energy crop growing and economics from Cardiff University, a First Class BSc in Forestry from Bangor University, and honorary doctorates of Laws and of science. She has been recognised as one of the '100 Women to Watch' and is a Fellow of the Institute of Welsh Affairs.
