Apple is to open a new office in Dublin this year taking permanent space in the capital for the first time saying the work will complement its expanded operations in Cork.

The tech giant officially opened its new facility in Hollyhill today which can accommodate up to 1,300 workers. Apple now employs more than 6,000 people in Ireland, primarily in Cork.

The company has had teams based in Dublin in the past but said it will take up space in Park Place later this year with capacity for 300 staff.

Apple has had a significant presence in Cork since 1980 establishing a facility on the city's northside just a few years after the company was founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.

Teams began moving into Apple’s new state-of the-art Hollyhill 5 facility last June. The Taoiseach Micheál Martin joined Apple's Vice President of Operations Cathy Kearney to officially open the building today.

"We’ve called Ireland home for more than 45 years, and are proud to continue expanding our operations and investing in our people and community here," Ms Kearney said. "Our 6,000 team members in Ireland play a critical role in supporting Apple’s customers in Europe and beyond and we’re delighted to build on this later this year with our new office in Dublin."

The new building follows the completion of a test and engineering facility in 2022 responsible for testing and analysing its products. The Hollyhill campus carries out a wide variety of services housing teams across the business, from operations, engineering, and manufacturing to procurement, customer support and AppleCare.

The Cork facility is responsible for shipping Apple products to over 50 countries and supports customers in more than 130 countries. As one of the State's largest employers, more than 90 nationalities work with Apple in Cork.

It launched its Employee Giving Program in 2011 where Apple workers have supported more than 600 charities in the country across issues like education, environment and accessibility.

"The contribution Apple has made in Cork and Ireland over the last 45 years cannot be overstated - creating thousands of highly-skilled roles and continually investing in their Irish operations," the Taoiseach said today.

Apple said Hollyhill 5 runs on 100% renewable energy. The Cork campus campus features more than 200 solar thermal panels plus rainwater harvesting. The design features local elements including Kilkenny limestone and glazing from Europe. At its height, construction employed 550 tradespeople, under the direction of architect Scott Tallon Walker and a general contractor P.J Hegarty.
