Oasis Croke Park concerts drive spending on tickets up almost 300%
The average spend on tickets on August 31 stood at €347, according to AIB data.
The average Irish consumer spend on entertainment tickets surged almost 300% to €347 on August 31, the day tickets for Oasis’ reunion tour went on sale, new data from AIB’s Spend Trend shows.
Oasis are due to play Croke Park on August 16 and 17 next year but the rollout of the tickets was met with controversy as fans were hit with a number of problems when trying to buy the tickets.
In addition, dynamic pricing of the tickets meant that some fans were left paying well in excess of the advertised price of €86.50 plus booking fees for a standing ticket.
According to the latest AIB data, August 31 saw spending by Oasis fans set two new records, the highest average transaction value for tickets among AIB customers so far this year, at €347 — up from the 2024 average so far of €87 — as well as the highest total spend on tickets in a single day during 2024 at €6.3m.
The highest average spend on tickets per transaction on the day was seen in Kildare at €466, followed by Monaghan at €444, and Louth at €429.
Electric Picnic fans drove the second largest ticket sales so far in 2024, on August 21, with an average transaction value of €231. The total spend on tickets by AIB customers that day was around €4.8m.
The day with the third highest spend on tickets was August 30, with around €3.9m spent. It was the day Oasis tickets went on pre-sale and the day All Together Now tickets went on general sale. The average transaction value that day was €258.
Head of consumer at AIB Adrian Moynihan said it was also a busy month for the hospitality sector which finished out “strongly for summer 2024”.
“And interestingly, homeware spend rose 13%, as people chose to invest in their homes and gardens during the summer months. These insights are vital for businesses, to help them plan accordingly, grow their business and support our customer’s choices.”
Other data from the Spend Trend shows that spending in restaurants was up 11% in August compared to July with spending in hotels up 7%, and pubs up 5%.
Overall spending during the month increased 3% compared to July.
Spending on homewares increased 13%, while spending on groceries increased 5%.
The data is compiled from 75 million debit and credit card transactions by AIB customers.
