Opel Ireland is recalling around 8,200 Opel Zafira B cars to protect them from a fire risk.

In the last six months, owners have been contacted about an issue affecting the blower motor resistor and its fuse.

Following contact with the Driver Vehicle Standards Agency, it has been decided to recall the cars to Opel dealerships for the work to be carried out.

Opel Ireland says owners of vehicles which have not yet had the initial recall completed should still bring their Zafira B to their dealership

Opel is preparing to recall almost 240,000 cars in Europe for a second time, over fears they could catch fire.

The company wrote to thousands of Zafira B owners last year to alert them about the problem and carry out repairs.

The firm, which also owns the Vauxhall marque, has said it is now recalling them again for a more permanent fix.

The problem last October was with the heating and ventilation system and Opel Zafira car owners experiencing trouble were advised to visit their local garage free of charge.

Campaigner Sue Freemantle owns a Zafira and isn't impressed at how the situation is being handled:” They think they have done things in good faith and they haven’t.

“They have blamed back-street garages, when they know this is not down to them, they know the issues, they know it’s their fault and they need to own up to it.”

Opel Ireland have released a statement regarding the issue stating: "Owners of Opel Zafira B models will be invited to bring their vehicles back to Opel dealerships so that a preventative action can be carried out to protect the vehicles from the risk of fire."
