Portugal is providing €4.9bn in an emergency rescue to prevent the collapse of ailing bank Banco Espirito Santo, one of the country’s oldest and biggest financial institutions.

Bank of Portugal governor Carlos Costa said the money would come from a special fund set up during the eurozone’s recent crisis to help financial institutions in difficulty.
