The FTSE 100 Index shed almost 2% today as worries over Chinese growth and mixed results from US banks sent tremors through world markets.

Losses from Bank of America and lower than expected earnings from Morgan Stanley did nothing to inspire dealers, while an unexpected fall in US home construction added to the sour mood.
