Lego today said UK and Irish sales rose 20% in the first half of the year despite a declining toy market as parents turned to the classic brand in the recession.

The Danish toy maker, famed for its brightly-coloured building blocks, grew its share of the UK and Irish markets and said it is now the country’s third largest toy manufacturer.
