The US unemployment rate spiked to 7.2% in December, adding to the economic gloom that faces incoming President Barack Obama.

During 2008 some 2.6 million Americans were put out of work, with 524,000 made jobless in the last month of the year alone, figures from the Department of Labour showed today.
