UK blue chips were lent some Christmas cheer today as commodities boosted London's leading share index despite further dire news from the retail sector.

City trading volumes remained subdued with many still off until the New Year, but the market was pushed higher by oil prices, which spent much of the day above the US$40 a barrel mark.
