Supermarkets 11% cheaper than convenience stores

A basket of groceries costs almost 11% more in convenience stores than in supermarket chains, according to a survey carried out by the National Consumer Agency.

The agency says it examined the prices of 58 branded products as part of the research in Dunnes, Tesco, Superquinn, Supervalu, Centra, Spar and Eurospar.

The survey found that prices only vary slightly in Dunnes, Tesco, Superquinn and Supervalu.

However, they are significantly higher in the other stores.

The research also found that groceries are generally more expensive in Dublin than the rest of the country.
