Supermarkets 'force farmers out'

The Irish Farmers' Association is accusing large supermarket chains of forcing Irish vegetable growers out of business.

It says the prices that large retailers pay for produce are unfair and are not enough for farmers to make a living off the land.

IFA president Padraig Walshe says unless retailers pay more to growers, the € 57m industry could soon become extinct:

He says producers have been facing falling food prices for the past 25 years or more, while also being expected to supply higher quality produce.
