The twin threat to the British economy of high oil prices and a weak US dollar deterred investors from buying UK stocks today.

The FTSE 100 Index closed 25.1 points lower at 4722.8 after a hostage crisis in Saudi Arabia forced the price of crude back on to an upward path.
