Mushrooms grow on Irish consumers

Irish people are eating more mushrooms with 82% of households here now buying them every fortnight.

The average shopper who buys the vegetable is now spending €31 a year on them.

The latest figures from Bord Bia, the Irish Food Board, shows that shop sales of mushrooms rose by 13% over the past year to €34m.

The increase in sales is believed to be due to the nutritional value of mushrooms which are also low in fat.
