The company that operates the Champion Sports chain of stores earned profits of more than €9m last year, according to the latest returns to the Companies' Registration Office quoted in the Irish Times.

The figures show that Irish-registered Champion Products Europe Ltd, had sales of €24.4m in the year to June 30, 2003, just under €1m more than in the previous 14-month period covered in its last annual returns.

The company had pre-tax profits of €9.6m in the year to the end of last June.

This was a slight increase on 2002, when it posted pre-tax profits of €9.4m.

There are 17 Champion sports shops in Ireland - 13 in Dublin and one in Cork, Waterford, Galway and Limerick.

Between them the stores employ approximately 150 people.
