Bruton to unveil 300 Shannon jobs

THE Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation, Richard Bruton, is expected to announce in Shannon tomorrow 300 jobs for two new Shannon firms and a “very significant” contract secured by an existing company.

At the Park Inn Hotel in Shannon tomorrow, Minister Bruton is expected to announce 300 jobs to the end of 2014 as part of US mobile accessory producer, ZAGG establishing a European Services Centre at Shannon.

The company has already commenced operations at Shannon and formed a company, Zagg International Distribution Ltd, with a share capital of €50 million.

It is expected the minister will announce 160 jobs now for Zagg and a partner company with a further 140 jobs over the next three years.

Shannon Development yesterday confirmed that Minister Bruton will be in Shannon for the announcement of ‘important investments in the Shannon Free Zone”, but declined to give further details.

Minister Bruton is also expected to announce a contract in excess of €14m secured by Bustec Ltd, which supplies technology to the International Space Station.

The anticipated announcement by Minister Bruton comes against the background of Shannon Development confirming this week that the Free Zone recorded a net jobs loss of 254 jobs last year, with the numbers employed at the zone declining by 4% to 6,066.

Bustec Ltd would only confirm yesterday that “a number of important announcements will be made by Bustec” tomorrow and that the contract “is very significant”.

It is understood that announcements concerning Bustec do not relate to new jobs.

Accounts recently filed by subsidiary, Bustec Production Ltd, for the 12 months to the end of December 2009 show that the company incurred a loss of €372,462 in 2009 with the cumulative losses since the company started at €6.3m.

A note to the accounts further confirmed that the company lost a further €251,000 for the first 10 months of 2010.

The note states that it is forecasting that cash inflows from sales between December 2010 and December 2011 will be €2.3m.
