DESIGN and art students from the 27 EU member states have been invited to create a logo for use on organic products.

The winning design will be introduced as the official logo for organic products across the EU from July 2010.

Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said the new organic logo will bring identity to the organic sector in the EU.

A €6,000 cash prize awaits the winner. The first and second runners-up will receive €3,500 and €2,500 respectively. Entries close on June 25. A jury of experts will select the best submissions which will be featured on the competition website www.ec.europa.eu/organic-logo

Meanwhile, all farmers’ markets on the island of Ireland have been invited to showcase their stands of quality local produce in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, on June 27-28.

The occasion will be the second annual All Ireland Farmers Market competition, which will be judged on the basis of Irish produce, quality, hygiene, traceability, presentation, customer service and value for money.

The event which will have a €5,000 prize fund.
