Decline in British lamb supplies

Marts: A decline in British lamb production throughout 2007 is forecast by the Meat and Livestock Commission to peak during the third quarter of the year, during which half the decline for the year will be experienced.

Decline in British lamb supplies

The decline is being attributed to a drop of 2% in the British sheep flock in 2006 with the resulting drop in the lamb crop this year, which together with a drop in the rate of cull ewe disposals, is forecast to add to a 5% overall drop in sheepmeat production for 2007.

However, Bord Bia says Britain will remain as the dominant supplier to the French market. French consumption is anticipated to ease somewhat, but nevertheless it is expected that the market will continue to be well supplied. Lower Irish production is also expected to help the trade for Irish lamb.
