Japanese stocks up

JAPANESE stocks gained, with the Topix index led by banks after Merrill Lynch & Co recommended investors buy Mizuho Financial Group Inc, saying its share price is too cheap.

The Nikkei 225 added 228.23 to 17,520.71.

Nippon Yusen KK and other shipping lines surged on speculation a recovery in container freight rates will boost earnings.
