A NUMBER of tax anomalies are causing hardship for many farmers and landowners, according to John Dawson, president of the Irish Auctioneers and Valuers Institute.

ā€œThese anomalies are causing undue grief for widows, farmers’ children and retiring couples.

ā€œIn fact, they discriminate against the farming family and are a major disincentive for a son or daughter to start farming,ā€ he said.

Mr Dawson said a lack of awareness means that people are innocently entering into various agreements and in subsequent years are hit with an unexpected tax bill out of the blue.
