Intel Corp may unveil new chip

New York: Intel Corp this week may demonstrate its first chip that can run both personal computers and the most- powerful server machines, in a bid to stem customer defections to Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Intel Corp may unveil new chip

The chip, code-named Yamhill, will crunch data in both PC- sized 32-bit batches and 64-bit ones, three analysts said. Intel has never admitted the chip exists, and analysts said they expect the company to discuss it for the first time at a conference in San Francisco this week.

Intel, whose chips run more than 80% of the world’s PCs, has lost out as International Business Machines Corp and Sun Microsystems Inc choose Advanced Micro’s Opteron chip for server computers that manage Internet sites. Opteron is the only processor on the market that runs both 32- and 64-bit software.
