Bacon sandwiches thrown at mosque door in Bristol
A man has been arrested in connection with an attack on a mosque in which bacon sandwiches were thrown at the door and abuse was shouted at worshipers.
Police believe two men and two women were involved in the alleged incident at the Jamia Mosque in Totterdown, Bristol on Sunday afternoon – which also saw a St George’s flag left at the scene.
Avon and Somerset Police has released CCTV images in the hope of identifying the people involved.
A 34-year-old man has been arrested and remains in custody, a force spokesman said.
Chief Inspector Kevan Rowlands said: “Behaviour of this kind is totally unacceptable.
“Our communities have the right to live and worship peacefully without fear of being targeted for their race or religion.
“We take all hate crime incidents extremely seriously and we are working closely with the mosque to ensure the offenders are held to account for their abhorrent actions.
“If anyone recognises the man and woman in the CCTV images, please call in with this information as soon as possible.”
Bristol Mayor George Ferguson condemned the attack. He said: “I’m disgusted by cowardly attack on members of Jamia mosque and stand with you to show Bristol does not tolerate such vile behaviour.”
