Greenpeace storms French nuclear plant

Greenpeace environmental activists have stormed into the grounds of a French nuclear power plant in a “non-violent” action aimed at showing the vulnerability of atomic sites in France.

French power company Electricite de France (EDF) said the intruders were “immediately detected” after the “illegal” pre-dawn raid at its plant in Nogent-sur-Seine, south east of Paris, today.

EDF said in a statement that seven of the nine intruders were apprehended but it did not say where the other two activists are.

It said the incursion did not affect the security of the site.

The company also said activists’ banners were hoisted on two other EDF sites - Chinon in north west France and Blayais in the south west – before they were quickly taken down.

France gets about three quarters of its electricity from nuclear power.
