Rwandan politician on terror charge
A top Rwandan opposition figure is facing accusations of trying to recruit fighters to destabilise the country.
The trial of Victoire Ingabire is seen by some as a litmus test for political expression in a nation still struggling to come to terms with the 1994 genocide.
Ingabire is accused of genocide ideology, revisionism, and backing terrorist groups.
She has yet to enter a plea. Her four co-accused – former members of a brutal rebel group based in the Congo – are pleading guilty.
Prosecutors say that Ingabire – who claims the charges are politically motivated – offered the group money to form a new militia. She faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
The case has highlighted divisions within the country over whether politicians can discuss the 1994 genocide without provoking more violence.
